Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart
Things Fall Apart is a literary novel written by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe in 1958. The title of the novel comes from a line in W. B. Yeats’ poem “The Second Coming”. Its main theme concerns pre- and post-colonial life in late nineteenth century Nigeria.
The bulk of the novel takes place in Umuofia, a cluster of nine villages on the lower Niger. Umuofia is a powerful clan, skilled in war and with a great population, with proud traditions and advanced social institutions. Okonkwo has risen from nothing to a high position.
